The great outdoors inspires young readers

Brandi Projects were delighted to once again be awarded the pleasure of fitting out the Chermside Library Children’s area as part of the overall Chermside Library which opened in a brand new building in March 2017. The new fitout was designed and fabricated in an overarching camping theme. Children can explore and imagine in a world which brings the outdoors in, to encourage play and associate reading with fun. The Chermside Children’s Library is the largest dedicated children’s library in Brisbane.

Features include:

• Reading ‘caravan’ encouraging pretend play, with spaces to sit and read in the kitchen.
• A dedicated campfire reading nook with detailed flame graphics on kids-safe clear acrylic and ‘log’ cushions inside.
• Interactive story-inspired game themed on the outdoors, where children can make their own story by spinning the disks on trees.
• Floor to ceiling wall graphics
• Children’s size “park bridge”

Chairman for Lifestyle and Community Services, Cr Matthew Bourke said the new library was 50 per cent larger than the former library which was visited by nearly 500,000 people in one year.

“The new Chermside library is fitted out with world-class features including the largest dedicated children’s library in the city, innovative learning spaces, an interactive ‘Maker Space’ for learning through making, collaborative study areas and a 116 space basement car park,” Cr Bourke said.

Cr Fiona King (Marchant Ward) commented:

“I think everyone is going to be surprised at the size of the library; it’s about double the size of the old library (at 3000sqm),” she said.

“It’s got a beautiful area for the small kids, a teenager area and a quiet area for people who just want to be in the library and relax.
